First party audits are audits of its own management system. They are conducted with the objective of continuous improvement of the system as well as for assessing the level of its conformity with specific standards and audit criteria.

In all Management Systems Standards, it is a requirement that internal auditors shall be independent of the processes they audit, in order to achieve the objectives of the audits by ensuring a certain degree of objectivity.
